Hello,

I've been looking into doing my undergraduate abroad and was curious as to whether or not students can use FAFSA money to help fund such endeavors. Any info is great.

Hello,

I've been looking into doing my undergraduate abroad and was curious as to whether or not students can use FAFSA money to help fund such endeavors. Any info is great.

Thanks.

[FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/faq003.htm)

You can get FAFSA money if you are doing a study abroad program through an American university. You cannot get any FAFSA money if you are just going to an international school.

Is there any federal assistance for attending international schools?

Of course not. Why would the U.S. invest in someone going abroad, it doesn’t make sense.

Just figured I’d ask. I know you can get Stafford loans for studying internationally. You never know – our government spends a hefty amount of money on things that don’t “make sense.” ;)

You can get a Stafford loan for doing a study abroad…I’m not sure you can get one for going to college abroad. Why not post this on the financial aid/scholarships area and see if anyone there knows.

The FAFSA is used for figuring out federally funded need based aid. To be honest, I’m not sure I support using that money for funding college educations for students who choose to matriculate in other countries.

just check the site. anyone posting on here hasn’t done their research. they are talking out of their ass… here is a link to international schools that are paid for with the program…

[Federal School Code Search Introduction - Federal School Code Search - Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLookupServlet)

FAFSA determines eligibility for Pell Grants, Federal loans and work study. Period. None will be relevant out of the US.

If you’re going to study in a US territory such as the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Micronesia, Guam, etc. that would probably work.

Though it is interesting that on the FAFSA site they do have school codes for overseas universities. That may be for study abroad purposes though, I’m not especially familiar with the rules.

Federal student aid can be used for study at foreign colleges if the student otherwise qualifies, but afaik the catch is that it must be a school that participates and is allowed to award US student aid in accordance with federal regulations (that’s true of US colleges as well…there are some that do not participate and therefore cannot award Pell, Stafford, FSEOG, Perkins, or federal work-study funds). There are limited numbers of schools abroad that do so…make sure you check (and double-check) on that before you apply if you’re going to need that type of aid in order to attend.
