FAFSA - American Opportunity Credit question

I saw a question where the answer was apparently at odds with the question. It asked , regarding the parents' tax forms, did you take the American Opportunity Credit?

I did take this credit and so I clicked the checkbox. But then this produced a sub - question that said to put the amount on line 31 of 1040a . In my taxes , the Tax Act tool for whatever reason, put zero on line 31 , but put 1,000 on the American Opp credit on some line further done, 40 something (I dont have the form with me at the moment). I think this was due to a zero tax liability possibly.

I hope this apparent contradiction does not prompt a verification when the basic q and a are at odds and not my response.

Is there a real contradiction in this question?

The amount on line 31 is removed from the EFC formula. The amount further down is not (that is the refundable amount). You are fine … it isn’t going to mess anything up.

so my response will be

yes, I took the credit.

–for a zero amount.

and this is ok?

Just put the amount they are requesting on the form. If line 31 is 0, put 0.
