Does the FAFSA need to be filled out before you apply and get accepted to a college? Or can you do the FAFSA after you applied and became accepted.
You need to check the school website fir deadlines and recommended dates. Keep in mind that some FinAid is awarded first come first served and that’s it when the money runs out, so in general it’s beneficial to submit FAFSA asap. You can do the FAFSA even before applying.
If you need FA, do submit the FAFSA early. There is a reason to make the submission started in October instead of January this year. Schools may send FA package shortly after admission notice. There is no reason to delay FAFSA as they are using 2015 tax info this year. Certain funds from schools are very limited.
@billcsho It says for the FAFSA the order matters for some state colleges for state grants. If I am applying to an out of state school where this applies. Does it even matter since I am out of state
@TheAvidSeeker Unless you are sure you do not qualify for any aid, do submit early. Funds can be from the state or the school’s endowment. The order of schools on the FAFSA application may also be important for state fund in some states, but that is a totally a different thing. You got mixed up.
What did I get mixed up then? What else would the order matter for @billcsho
If you are not applying to in state school with state aids that requires to be listed first on FAFSA, schools may view the order as an expression of interest. In most cases, it does not matter. Your original question was whether to submit FAFSA now. That has nothing to do with the order of schools on the list.
None of the schools except one out of state required to be listed first- but that one school is an out of state school. Would they view it as an order of interest in that case? What case would they? @billcsho
So state aid would not apply to me since I am OOS

Is there a problem with listing that one college first since it’s the only one with that requirement?
Only very prestigious schools may care about your expression of interest.
