FAFSA and CSS for Biological and Step Parents

@annaheyworld

One of my kids is a BU graduate. The college is nearing $70,000 a year. BU does NOT guarantee to meet full need for all…and they do not. Even their best merit aid awards are not full free rides.

Really…if this is a school you are considering, you need a plan to pay for it.

Hoping you have some affordable schools on your list.

Oh no we definitely don’t hope for them or any other college to pay for everything. We know we will have to invest a lot of money to be able to go to college. I’m not tying to get more financial aid I’m just trying to save time.

@annaheyworld

Both the fafsa and Profile have been available for submission since OCTOBER.

Anyway…you don’t have a choice. If a college requires this form, you need to get it done.

But I did complete my forms last year! BU responded just a few days ago. They were the only college that did not accept the documents and explanations I provided. The other 11 schools were ok with everything I sent.

They could respond faster or provide some help. Its not that hard.

Did the other 11 colleges require the non-custodial parent Profile?

What’s not that hard? BU is processing your application as well as about 10,000 others. Every one has some issue that needs to be resolved, a parent who doesn’t speak English, a parent in prison, a parent who has lot a job. And there are a lot of parents who just plain refuse to pay. Those are the kids I feel sorry for.

Not all of them but most did require it. And I was just saying that to point out that I completed everything way earlier, if they reply late and I cannot complete everything on time then it’s not my fault and not theirs but the systems. The financial aid system here is awful everyone knows that, there are many more examples why very smart kids cannot afford to go because the admissions and financial aid only favors one type of people.

This is simply not true, but I’ll give you a pass because you don’t have the experience or knowledge to know what you are talking about and you are frustrated with your particular situation. Anyway, if you think that you would be better off going to college in a different country, then by all means, leave the U.S. for your college education.

Who is “we”? Who is going to invest a lot of money for your college? Your mom? If only your mom, then how much does she earn? Your mom and stepdad? What is there income?

I think anyone would be better off having education in another country if we look at financial side of things.

My mom, stepdad and I will pay. Their income together is close to 100K.

My real dad cannot pay and we don’t want him to pay.

I’m not only frustrated with my situation I know many smart people who got in prestige colleges like NYU and Northeastern but cannot pay. I also know people who left the country to study abroad for a year in HS and now have to take last years classes since they missed a year and that’ll make them look like they’re less smart even though they’re trying to do something unique and interesting.

anna, your parents (mom and stepdad) have an income that can provide you with opportunities that poor, smart students can only dream of. I’m really not sure what point you’re trying to make or what advice you’re seeking.

You might not be able to go to your “dream” school. You know what? Welcome to the reality of the vast, vast, VAST majority of students in the US. Is it an ideal system? No. You won’t hear me sticking up for it. But the people on this board are here to help you work with what we currently have… not try to change it. I’d contact your Rep and Senators for that.

Our efc is still close to 40k in some places so I will be in a lot of debt too, just like most people. I only want the money to go towards a college that’s actually worth it (in this current situation we have, but I don’t think anyone should pay this much for college). BU is such a great school but if they decide to not consider my CSS then we’d have to pay their full price which will be too much debt.

I would have to resesch what else I can do that’ll help change what’s going on today. The least I can do is if I stay in the US I’d definitely get a citizenship status and vote for the right people.

OP, you’re upset that you have to confirm that your father earns little. We get it. But this college IS asking for this info, on the proper forms. They don’t know what your father earns until they get the document.

Worse, you’ve applied to some colleges not known for good financial aid. Why colleges that expect 40k min per year? You alone can’t get that in loans.

It doesn’t matter if you think the system is unfair, college costs too much, or some countries have less expensive colleges. What matters is that US families target colleges they can afford, without crazy debt.

That’s what you can control, your own choice to do this reasonably, sensibly, not be fooled into thinking BU (or whatever) is so “great” that you have to have it, for 160k or more in debt. Not being so sure it’s their problem you chose schools not affordable.

You need to rethink your own choices.

All affordable state schools in my state are in the middle of nowhere or if they’re in a city, most students commute. All large city schools just happen to be expensive and why would I pay to live somewhere where I will always feel upset. If it was in a different state, that’s another story.

It’s not the end of the world if I can’t go to BU I just asked if there are more opportunities or help available for this college and there’s not so thank you everyone who answered my question.
