I now have my second notice from a school that the FAFSA form indicated uncertainty about my daughter’s citizenship. So I have to send Certificate of Citizenship (or a copy anyway) to them. I’m trying to figure out which government agency I need to get this information corrected by. Is it IRS? Social Security? Thoughts, anyone? TIA.
The social security office needs to confirm they have her listed as a citizen in their system. You can call to confirm.
@KarenK99 please PM me… I ran into the same issue with my D and can give you more info on what needs to be done.
Homeland Security should have your daughter listed as a citizen if a US passport was issued.
The passport does not change her status at USCIS or at Social Security. They may still have her listed as a permanent resident.
We had to file an N600 to get the COC.
It’s a real pain and I am sorry if this turns out to be your situation.
We just received the Certificate of Citizenship for our youngest child (not my MT’er). They told us we would have to notify Social Security of his status change, so I’d probably start there.
If an internationally adopted child came into the country anytime before 2000 you didn’t automatically get a COC.
You had to apply for one once you came home.
Many people did not know this because
US passports were issued.
It’s a problem for many kids who are 17 and older.
Thanks all, we do have the CofC, so I think it’s Social Security that needs to be updated!
