I registered with selective service and indicated so on the FAFSA, but they were unable to confirm it through the Selective Service website. I checked myself, and then checked my selective service registration letter (I received it late last year when I registered) and noticed that Selective Service did not have my social security number on file (I do have a selective service number). If FAFSA cannot confirm I am registered, does it send out the reports to schools anyways? And how can I make sure that I my financial aid applications will not be delayed? Should I just call the schools or should I call the FAFSA people? Thanks!

You are going to have to send each school a copy of the selective service confirmation letter. Do this as soon as possible.

You need to contact Selective Service to get your social security number linked to your selective service registration.

Same thing happened to me. I sent the schools I applied to a copy of my selective service confirmation letter, and sent the top part of the said letter (the part you use to make corrections) to Selective Service together with my ssn.

Thanks, Ill do that.

This seems to happen more often than you’d expect. I’ve known two kids to whom it happened. For anyone yet to register, it seems the most seamless error-free way to do it is to register directly through the FAFSA instead of registering independently of it.

Hopefully it is understood that yes you will qual for financial aid by checking that box, but you will also be registered for a draft in the event there aren’t enough volunteers in the military during what’s turning into tough times.
^^but it is not like there is a choice not to apply for financial aid and therefore not have to register with Selective Service. You don’t have to apply for FA, but you still have to apply for SS if you are male and in that age group.
