FAFSA and Separation/Divorce Question

Didn’t see your update before I posted. Good luck.

Federal aid is for low income students. Your FAFSA EFC would need to be below $5200 to get even a small amount of the Pell Grant. If you can pay fully now, are you low income?

What “federal aid” were you hoping to receive? The max Pell Grant is $5800 or so…which would be with a FAFSA EFC of $0.

It sounds like the child might qualify for about 1000 if only mom’s info is used. While 1000 isn’t a lot, it could pay for books.

@thumper1 - As a student, MY EFC (personal, with a dependent) was $12k at the same school. I got $900 in Pell. I was hoping for work study at the least. I’m not low income, obviously, since I said I could pay. But with $x set aside for college to spread over 4 years, any little bit helps.

@mom2collegekids - EVERY little bit helps. Agreed. Even if it’s enough for ONE book, that’s one less book I have to buy myself!

Thanks everyone for your help. I’ll be filling it out using H’s info this year and then just mine for next year.

If your FAFSA EFC was 12,000, then the aid you got wasn’t Pell. there is no Pell at all for EFCs that are beyond about 6,000.

Perhaps the aid you got was a univ grant or state grant. But it couldn’t have been Pell if your FAFSA EFC was 12,00
