FAFSA and the 11th College - a UC

I’ve seen the instructions for deleting one college and then going back adding another in FAFSA.
But I’m unlikely to receive any federal aid nor any Cal Grant. If I just neglect to submit a FAFSA
for one of the UC’s - would it harm my chances for acceptance to that school?

FAFSA is federal aid, so not adding that one school onto FAFSA just means you won’t get any federal aid for it. Even though you think you may not qualify for much, you could possibly get up to a couple thousand dollars, which is definitely a lot of if you think about it

I applied to…wait for it…21 schools!!! AHHHH! I know…a lot…but I can’t take chances since my parent’s can’t pay for any of it. Zilch.

ANYWAYS-----I had to add 10 schools to FAFSA, then wait about a week, and then replace those with the next set of 10, and then delete one of them and add on the the final school after waiting another week. It is definitely more time consuming, but really not as hard as it seems. If you have the FAFSA done already, all you really have to do is get back on it, delete one of the schools after you know it’s processed, and replace it with your final school.

Wish you luck!

Ok. Thanks much! The whole delete a school makes me worry that something’s going to go wrong with the original 10 schools. But you’ve emboldened me to sally forth.

That’s what I thought, too. I was worried that if I “deleted” schools that they wouldn’t receive something or something would go wrong, but as long as you give it time to process (like a day or two AFTER you receive that confirmation email that they received it, which I received about 4 days after) the school has everything and “deleting” it doesn’t do anything nor does the school know about it.

I even called up collegeboard before I did it to make sure “deleting” a school wouldn’t affect or hurt my chances. They assured me that it doesn’t change anything. Since the school has received your FAFSA, deleting the school after they have received it doesn’t do anything.

If you plan on going into FAFSA to do corrections, you simply have to do that whole “replacement” thing—remove + add—to make sure that that extra school that was replaced receives the corrections. Does that make sense? Hopefully, because it’s just as simple as what you will be doing right now!

I’m happy though that you are going to move forward with it, because it’s definitely worth it in the end!!!

Oh, ALSO: to add that 11th school, you don’t even have to remove 10 schools. You can just remove one!

Just an added note as I just went through this yesterday verifying it with FAFSA hotline. @SchoolGirl96 is correct as posted above. When making corrections to add your additional colleges, make sure to do the waiting period or until you get the final confirmation email from FAFSA that the “Correction for 2015-2016 - Processed Successfully”. For me, the email confirmation arrived a day or two after I submitted it. Just don’t go logging in to your account just to look at the status, until you receive that confirmation email or you will generate another processing clock on the corrections you just submitted (e.g. you’ll get a duplicate version of the FAFSA when you look at your correction history). Once you do get that final email that it’s processed successfully, then you can go into your account, delete the number of spots you need to add the colleges you need (it’s true, if you only need 1 more spot for your 11th college, you can just replace the first college spot, and leave the rest of your original colleges on there). Once this corrected version with the newly added colleges is fullly processed as confirmed by email, then the added colleges get sent your FAFSA and the rest of the colleges you left on there, including the one you replaced in the first spot, will also get that new version of the corrected FAFSA. If you end up correcting your FAFSA again to update your financial data (like using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if you had originally estimated the amounts on initial submittal), then there is no need to do this process of correcting the FAFSA and replacing the colleges to add the original colleges back on, and then having to correct again to add the next batch of added colleges in it. The FAFSA service rep. specifically said that if all your prior corrections were successfully processed, then ALL your colleges listed on the initial FAFSA and the added colleges on subsequent FAFSA corrections (even though the initial colleges may have gotten replaced by the added colleges)–will get the corrected FAFSA version with the updated financial data. The colleges, however, can take up to 2 weeks for them to acknowledge receipt of your FAFSA and update their online portals. Good luck!
