I submitted the FAFSA but income was overstated. I haven't received confirmation that they were to the schools. TO correct the FAFSA, I guess we need to wait to say they processed the original.

When I send in corrections, can I then start a new one to send to other schools? Assuming more than 10 schools.

Dunno…I’m waiting for mine to be processed, just like you. As soon as I sent it I realized I’d made one mistake and maybe two. I even left one college off. Dunno how that happened, I selected it, and it appeared on the list, but wasn’t listed later when it was all said and done. Have no CLUE what happened to it. I have to correct mine anyway, as it’s an “estimate” (my taxes aren’t done).

So…yes I’m sure it’s very easy to correct. And people do it ALL the time! But, yes, you have to wait until it’s processed. What a crazy mess for colleges to be getting so many corrections. Now that it’s electronic, probably a ton easier.

THIS WAS ON another thread…found the following info on the FAFSA Q&A website:

"If I want to apply to more than ten schools, what do I do?

You can only select up to ten schools at a time to receive your application information. Once you receive the processed Student Aid Report (SAR), you can:

■Select Add or Delete a School Code and add more schools by submitting a correction to your FAFSA information.
TIP: If you make further corrections after adding the new schools, the schools you removed from the original list will not receive these corrections."

Looks like the corrections have to be done, BEFORE submitting more schools, if you have more than 10 schools.

No you can’t start a new one for the same year. You can only correct an existing one.
No. To send it to more than 10 schools you make a correction, deleting the original schools and adding the additional schools. But if you later have to correct information such as income or taxes you have to make sure you send the correction to all the schools. Same process - make the corrections to income and taxes, wait for it to be processed, go back into the corrected FAFSA and change the schools.

This is very time consuming and must prevent some from applying. Limiting it to 10 schools, with electronic submission, I don’t know why they couldn’t allow more than 10.

If you have 15 schools, you have a fafsa 1, you delete the first 10 schools after you get an email confirmation, you delete the 10 names and add the new 5 schools and you get a fafsa 2.

If you then find you want to correct, lets say, income based on 2009 bc it is different than your estimate from your 2008 returns and you cannot yet file your 2009 returns, you will then have fafsa 3 and a fafsa 4. Can you do that before filing the 2009 returns?

Lets say you can file your 2009 returns on March 15, you then check off now that you have filed your 2009 returns after 3/15, then this creates a fafsa 5 and a fafsa 6.

Are thes steps all allowed and is this correct? Deep sigh!!!

Kelsmom, if you have the energy to read my post #8, I would love your expertise!

Oh, and your are so right, most kids at my son’s school do not apply to many schools. A fair number apply to only one school, our instate flagship.

I think more and more students are doing more than 10 apps. This year with apps being up so much, it is probably more an issue. Again, it is electronic, so you would think the Gov. site would allow more.

Northeastmom, if no financial aid offices have made any changes on their end that were sent out to the processor, your idea is correct. When you go in to update, you can type in a transaction # (it says something like “if your school asked you to update a particular transaction”). If you keep a printout of your initial 2 transactions, you could compare & then if it all looks good you can update those transactions & send them on their merry way.

So let’s say #1 has schools 1-10. #2 is where you deleted the first 10 schools, so that has #s 11-15. If you need to fix something, you can pull up #1 & fix, then send off to schools 1-10; this will be #3. Wait until it processes just to be sure that nothing crosses at the processor. Then pull up #2. Fix schools 11-15 & send off as #4. These will be #5 and #6 respectively after you finish the updates.

Just remember that the more changes you make, the more chance of being selected for verification (statistically speaking) … not that it guarantees you will be verified, of course. I have seen students with 10 transactions who were never selected for verification (luck of the draw).

Collegesgirl, what seems “easy” may not be so easy. The processor has probably limited the number based on their computer system & its capabilities. When I worked in financial aid in the late 80s, there was no internet … technology has made tremendous strides in an extremely short period of time. It’s not always as simple as it seems to make changes.

collegesgirl…until a couple of years ago, the college limit on each submission on the FAFSA was SIX colleges. It was increased to 10, I believe in 2008-2009.

And as mentioned before…the VAST MAJORITY of students apply to far less than 10 schools.

Sorry, but I just don’t think this is a huge issue. You CAN submit to 100 schools if you want to…you just have to take the time to delete/add on the FAFSA to do so.
