So guys, I submitted my FAFSA app sometimes mid-February, and now it's March 11th and I was just going through the processed file (because my friends already received the grant but I haven't received anything from fafsa), and I JUST realized that my citizenship wasn't confirmed.... Which, in other words, I have to make corrections... BUT IT'S MARCH 11TH!! What should I do? Am I late? Is there a deadline for correction? Will grants run out? When they mention the "show proof to financial aid school", are they talking about MY high school? Guys I am so stressed out... I know I should have look more closely after I applied, but you'd think that something as big as "federal grant" would email you at least to contact you about ANYTHING. (I didn't even get a SINGLE email). So yeah, can any of you answer my questions? Especially the "am I late" one. Thanks guys!!! >.<

It’s not a big deal to anyone who has to GIVE YOU the money. You don’t work for it, you don’t get it. You’ll find this an important lesson in life.

It all depends upon your school as to whether you are late or not. The school have their own deadlines. You need to submit the FAFSA and make all of the corrections, send extra info, do whatever you are asked to do, to get an award package. If you are late, you will still get the federal funds such as PELL if you are eligible and the Stafford loans, again depending on eligibility, and you will have to stay on top of what to do to get that money processed, by the way. You have to sign a promissory note and go through some processe. The money will go to the school, not to you and usually gets there at the start of the term and you will have to make up whatever it doesn;t cover. Federal funds are dispensed by the term, so your school gets half the amount for the fall, for example. If there is anything left over after tution, fees, room and board if indicated, you will get it usually around the Drop Date of your school, so even if you get full expenses covered, you need some up front money to pay for books, travel expenses, etc until those funds are released.

You may have lost out on whatever limited funds a school gives out because often it is first come first served, but the faster you get moving, the better the chances somtething is left. YMMV on this. Depends upon the school, how much they have, how on the ball the other students are, and how many of them have a claim to the money this year. Do be aware that there is never enough.

You need to cal and talk to somene at each financial aid office of the schools you are considering and have them tell you exactly what to do and do it ASAP.

There is actually nothing you can do to fix the issue … what you have to do is contact the school to find out what documentation they need from you to confirm your citizenship. This issue did not cause your FAFSA to reject, so the school should be using the date you filed your FAFSA as the date for aid purposes. However, some schools will not package aid if a student has a flag for various issues (such as citizenship), and aid like SEOG and work study can run out — not saying this is the case at your school(s), just pointing it out as a possibility. That is why I say that you should contact them and get them whatever documentation they want … so your file can be in great shape as soon as possible.
