Fafsa correction notification

we submitted the FAFSA using estimated numbers in January. At the end of February I logged in back to the FAFSA site and corrected the numbers using the tax papers. Our income and EFC went down.
Only today I got an email from FAFSA that "2011-2012 FAFSA Correction for ...was processed on APRIL 04, 2011 and the data will be made available to the school(s) listed on the student's application."

What does this mean for us? Should I inform the schools about the changes or they will reprocess the financial aid packages that we were already offered?

I had the same thought as you about contacting the schools. I checked my copies of our FAFSA from the last time I corrected it which was in Feb. and the original from Jan. The new report from April shows the original amount, not the corrected amount. Since there is only $61 difference between them, I’m not going to do anything. But it is weird that their “updated” version is action my old version.

I just called the FAFSA folks last night because in the span of 30 minutes i got 4 emails about changes to my form - when I didn’t do anything. They said everytime a school goes into the form to verify something - it comes through as “change” email.

^ Thanks Rachel for the info. Funny, I always decide to check CC first before actioning…lol

Same thing happened here. I called and was told it was some type of system error on their part and not to worry about it. When I checked after the first email, our fafsa showed the Jan estimates. A couple hours later the fafsa was back to the corrected version. Hopefully the system isn’t continually notifying schools.

^Yes, thanks, Rachel. I have gotten what seems to be an inordinate number of these “FAFSA Correction emails”, when I have not corrected anything! Good to hear a (somewhat) logical explanation.

We did too! We received 4 emails last night and 4 more emails today.

Made me nervous.

Us too e mail yesterday originally submitted Jan 15th showed change April 4th, well I guess that could mean someone is checking something so potential upcoming decisons?

ED had to do some reprocessing over the weekend. You may have seen my posts indicating that there were some issues due to the ability to skip providing asset information based on the asset threshold test. It was a behind-the-scenes problem. ED had to do some things on their end & send reprocessed FAFSA files to the schools. Give it a couple days to let the dust settle. You should see your most recent EFC show up.

Interesting. I got a change notice, too, for both of my kids. Each one’s EFC went down by just a little bit — under $20.

Kelsmom - out of curiosity - when you are verified is it best to just leave it up to the school to update your FAFSA? I used estimated figures to file FAFSA way back in January. We just found out my daughter’s FAFSA was picked for verification (but not mine). I have been really busy so had not done actual taxes yet, so rushed and finished the taxes (despite a lot of problems with turbo tax which gave me problems after I had almost completed three returns but before I actually filed - I ended up using a different freefile online software and having to redo all three returns :(). I dropped the verification data and tax returns off at the FA office today. I wasn’t sure if I should update FAFSA or if that would confuse matter and I should just leave them to do it? (income is slightly lower than estimated but not much difference).

By the way I tried to answer you pm the other day but your inbox was full.

IMO, it is best to just let the aid office make the updates during verification. If your changes happen to cross in processing with their changes, it can be a pain. They will make any necessary updates.

I am not in the office this week so do not know what is going on with the reprocessed FAFSA’s … from the number of people posting about sudden EFC changes, I am wondering if there isn’t something going on behind the scenes. If so, I would imagine things should be fixed within a few days. It is always wise to log into your FAFSA to view the info. If you have any concerns, contact your school to discuss.

(I cleaned out my inbox … you were probably the reason I got the inbox full message that prompted me to clean it, swimcatsmom! :)).

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Thank you.
