Fafsa correction: Will it effect title IV Aid this semester?

Although my question may become more complex than this, let's start with the title of this thread. Way back at the.beginning of the year when I filled out my Fafsa my Efc was high. Now it is $0, after the corrections I made today, I should have qualified for a Pell Grant it turns out. Can I still receive that funding this late in the game?

I can guarantee you that the change you made prompted selection for verification. There is an asterisk next to your EFC now, isn’t there?

You cannot make the update you made. The FAFSA is based on 2011 income, and the corrections were made based on something else, right?

You need to contact your school to explain that you want to request a special circumstances review. Ask how to do it. Also, be sure to tell them what you did … if their system is automated, it might allow a Pell grant to disburse in error. If that happens, you will have to repay it. Usually, schools have a disbursement hold for students selected for verification. But if you were selected earlier & were verified at that time … then made the recent update … it could slip past the system.

I’m not worried about verification. I can definitely prove the change that I made today has been the case since late June. It just didn’t occur to me to change it on the Fafsa until I happened to be in the website today adding more schools, as I’ll be transferring soon.

True the income was all based on last year, however my number of dependents went from 0 when I filled the Fafsa out, to 1 in late June. The change has a significant effect.

So, will it effect title IV aid for this semester, and allow me to receive additional grants which I can then use to pay down loans?

Thanks,

Having a dependent only matters IF you are supporting that dependent child. Are you?

Yes, I am providing far more than the 50% of support required by the question on the Fafsa. I’m not concerned about meeting the qualifications or being able to verify the change I made with documentation. I wouldn’t have made the correction had I not be sure that it was accurate. I just don’t know if it’s moot or not for aid this semester considering this semester is now almost over.

As long as you can document that you provide at least 50% support, your change is good. Let the finaid office know NOW - if you are Pell-eligible, you will get the Pell for fall based on current enrollment. You won’t get any other grants, most likely, as everything else is first-come, first-served & is likely long gone.
