Fafsa & CSS question...I am confused!!!

Hello everyone,

I have done our taxes but have not send them in to the IRS because I am waiting on my H 1099's. I have already done fafsa for seven schools and received the SAR report. I am almost 100% I don't have to make any corrections to the Fasfa. What happens next!!

My questions are:

When I get my H's 1099s, I will send my taxes (by mail) to the IRS. Do I need to go back to the Fafsa and change the answer from will file to completed? I think those are the choices, I can't remember the exact question nor answer!!!

Do I have to send a copy of my return, W2s amd 1099 to the schools? Or do I wait until they ask for them?

I have also done and sent the CSS for some EA schools (4) based on my 2010 taxes. I do have to make some changes based on my 2011 taxes. Questions:

(A) For those schools tha I have already sent ths CSS, do I just send them a copy of my 2011 return with the W2's, 1099 etc?
(B) For those schools (7) that I will send the CSS with the corrections already made, do have to also send them our tax return etc or do I wait until they ask for them?

Thanks for the help!!!

Each school has their own policies as to what paperwork they want and how they want to receive it and when.

For CSS, you will need to resend it (probably by fax) with corrected numbers (hand written).

Yes…for the FAFSA, go back and change to “taxes completed” or whatever indicates that your taxes have been filed.

You will need to check each school’s website. Our kids applied to schools that actually required tax return submission as part of the financial aid application process (some did…some didn’t).

In any event…don’t send anything unless the school either requires it now…or requests it in the future.

Again…don’t send ANY tax returns unless they are REQUIRED now or requested in the future.

Re: updating the schools…you will need to contact each school regarding their process for updating Profile information to reflect 2011 tax return information. This will vary by school but each school does have a process by which to do this.
