2006 taxes are done, now comparing actual numbers to the estimates previously submitted on FAFSA and CSS. There is very little change-- $700 on AGI, $500 on total tax paid, both in parents favor. Is this worth doing all the changes on? Is it required? We'll need all possible aid, but not sure if these small differences will help.

It's required. Your finaid awards will only be estimates and will not be finalized until you resubmit your FAFSA and Profile reflecting 2006 numbers, and that you have completed and filed your taxes. Even if the numbers were identical, you would have to amend to indicate a change in your "will file" status to "filed".

you definitely want to amend. You don't want the IRS numbers and fafsa & Profile numbers to not match. Fafsa can be easily be done online, but Profile is a pain. You have to print out a hardcopy, cross out the original estimate, write in the correct amounts and send hardcopy to the school.

I've never corrected a Profile and have never been asked to -- I simply sent the corrected info and copies of tax returns directly to the college. There are all kinds of things that colleges have nagged me about in terms of paperwork -- but asking me to make changes to a Profile form is simply not one of them. If there is changed info that would not be reflected on the tax return and/or FAFSA, then I'd just write the college financial department an explanatory letter.

We had to make changes to three Profiles last year. In all three cases, the colleges asked us to print out the Profile we submitted, write in the corrections and mail them directly to the college. Of course it would have been MUCH easier to have done this online...but that's another thread of whining. Each college has its own person to mail the corrected Profile to, call and ask. The FAFSA is so easy...correct and resubmit online.

Thanks for the responses. As soon as I saw thumpers note yesterday, I went in and amended the FAFSA online and made the correction copies on CSS. All in the mail now and it really wasn't that big of a deal. I had forgotten the 'will file' status on the FAFSA, so along with bluebayou's point that all dollar amounts between FAFSA/CSS/IRS should match, it made sense that it needed to be updated.

I was going to say that you should call to make sure about the CSS, because a fairly large number of my schools said it's not necessary to correct the Profile because the FAFSA and IDOC info will be up-to-date and they'll make the corrections themselves. But hey, you already did it :).

And thanks for making this topic, I COMPLETELY forgot to change the box from "will file" to "filed" when I did my corrections.

I have to make corrections to the CSS profile, but I don't want to print out all the pages... I don't need to make the changes on some of the pages and the last page reveals the other schools I'm applying to.

My question is to those who already made revisions to the profile... did you send all the pages, or only the ones you needed to revise?

I sent all of the pages.

Forget my question... the financial aid office is a separate institution from the admissions office, so I don't think it'll matter if they see the other schools I'm applying to.
