FAFSA Determined Homeless last year

The FAFSA website has this:

"At any time on or after July 1, 2013, did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?"

My question is that my high school determined I was homeless before I graduated in 2013 to help me complete my FAFSA last year, do I need to be determined again or do I continue to file as an independent? And if I have to be determined again how do I do it?

The reason I was determined homeless was do to my parents being very difficult to contact due to them living in another country (Mexico) to get them to file their financial information and papers.

Talk to you school’s financial aid office about your current situation. They will help you figure out what to do based on your situation.

Yes, you would have to be determined again.

What is your status now?

If you have been in contact with your parents or if you know where they are, you must include their income.

I wonder if there is more to this story. I am assuming the high school was operating on the up-and-up when they helped last year, but it seems odd that they were able to get that designation simply because it is hard to locate the parents to get their info. That is not the intent of the homelessness designation, and I don’t know how the student could be considered homeless according to regulations without actually BEING homeless. Again, though, there may be more to the story. I definitely think it is important for the OP to talk to the school’s financial aid office as soon as possible.
