I've applied for a parent pin, but does the student also need to apply for a pin?

Yes......you both need to fill out portions of the application and to do so online you each need a signature PIN.

agree
two pins
however one will suffice for parent portion if they file joint taxes

Thank you. Now, since I have a reluctant D and would rather not bring up the word "college", can I fill out her pin app for her?

While it does not take much to apply early, I read that, starting this year, it will possible to apply for the PIN at the same time as filling the FAFSA. The information should be at the FAFSA site.

Yes, you can apply for the pin without her involvement. However, if you give her email address, the pin will be sent to her instead of you. It is very important that she watch for the pin, as there is a limited period for viewing it, and you have to make a record of the pin for posterity. You will use the same one every year.

Is there anything that needs to be done if one applied for 3, but only needs 2?

I think you should just plan to use one of them for the parent signature, but no harm done, as far as I know. For instance, I got one last year for me for S1's FAFSA, and my DH got one this year to sign the FAFSA for stepson, S2. So we both have one.

momofthree, I thought we needed one student and 2 parent pin numbers (total of 3 pin #s). I did not realize that if you file jointly you only need one parent pin. I thought that it was one pin per person, and each person needs to sign electronically.

Northeastmom,
I checked around and found the following link,
http://www.petersons.com/ugchannel/file.asp?id=461&sponsor=1&path=ug.pfs.advice

so, though I guess you could both sign, you really just need one pin for both parents.

Hope this helps!

Thank you.

northeastmom,

I sent you a PM!

Baseball Mom : Go ahead and apply for your daughter and use your email address . If I waited for my D to get good and ready , she would not have gotten all the financial aid she received . Now , with her away at school , and loses all her grants receipts and work - study paystubs, it gets more challenging ( yet she can produce a 30 page research paper with no problem !) .

Now I have a question , DS should get his own pin ( second prospective college child ) but we keep our original parent PIN for him as well ??

Same parent PIN yes, as to the pay stubs.....you will get a form to use for the filing so collecting the stubs isn't necessary.

We have an email for D that is only for college use. I'm the one who checks it and I forwards to her regular email account. That way I know what needs to be done!

Does anyone have the link to the DOE/fafsa site?

Here it is ...

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

thank you sjmom

How long does it take to get your PINS?

At this time of year........a couple days max. Later....it could be longer.

SO if you have two children in college do you need two pins for the kids and just one for the parents or one parent pin for each child?
