Fafsa EFC different than Collegeboard EFC

Our Fafsa EFC came out at about $40,000. The EFC on the Collegeboard.org website comes out at about $33,500. Is this typical? Any idea about the difference? Ours is pretty standard situation. Two working parents income AGI $130,000, one child, about $10,000 checking, $150,000 investments including 529 plan.

Did I miss something on the Fafsa?

Thanks

Our Collegeboard or IM EFC with similar income runs also about an $8,000 less. Our child attends an IM school and furtunately the EFC help us some with the not so bad package. Yep, my ‘whine’ is $3.00 chuck…

Well the assets would have an impact. Parents have some asset protection but up to 5.6% of assets over that will go toward the EFC.

Make sure you reported the 529 accounts as parent assets.

Make sure you correctly answered the income from work question. Some people think this question double counts income already included in the AGI. It is actually used to calculate allowances for FICA taxes (the allowances will reduce the income used in the EFC).
