FAFSA for Fall 2010 semester

This question is about Financial Aid for this Fall 10' Semester. When is the LATEST i can file FAFSA for Fall 2010?

You can file the FAFSA at any time from now until June 30, 2011. I do not recommend waiting, however. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to receive aid. For example, if you file now & are selected for verification, your aid package will probably not be ready until after your tuition is due. You are probably too late to receive SEOG, work study, or institutional grants - these are usually first-come/first-served & go FAST in today’s economic climate. If you are eligible for Pell or ACG, your award may be adjusted if you apply AFTER the term ends (for example, if you withdraw after the 60% mark, you would keep your full grant if your aid is complete prior to your withdrawal but will receive an adjusted award if your aid is completed after your withdrawal). And if you are eligible for loans, you will NOT get the loan if you do not have everything in order WHILE you are still in classes.

If you’re looking for aid for this Fall (that is to say, next month), I really try and fill it out as soon as possible. Kelsmom is absolutely correct, as per usual; particularly for institutional grants, if you miss the priority deadline the money runs out and you won’t get the aid even if you really need it.

thanks for the replies.

If i pay the tuition with my own money for fall 09, and file fafsa in JAN 2011, is it possible to get reimbursed partially or the whole tuition for fall 09?

I don’t think you can get grant aid retroactively, though I may be wrong. Even if you could what would be the point in waiting until January to file?

does grant aid include, TAP and PELL?

Yes. Pell is grant aid - requires a very low EFC. TAP is a grant but is not federal, it is a NY State grant. That may have different deadlines (I know our state grant, much smaller than TAP, requires FAFSA to be filed by the end of April for the following school year).

I might be wrong about the retroactive payments - I found some stuff on the internet that seems to indicate you can get the pell grant retroactively for the fall as long as you were eligible and enrolled in the fall. Something you should check with the financial aid department though.

You do realize that you still have to file the 2010-2011 FAFSA using 2009 income data even if you file in january if it is for the 2010-2011 school year, right? The new FAFSA available january 1st 2011 will be for the 2011-2012 school year.

You can get Pell retroactively, but there are a bunch of rules associated with late payments - you might not get what you WOULD have received if you wait.

Why would you wait?

my parents are currently out of the country til next year, and they have all the documents i need to file it.

You don’t need a while bunch of documents. Just 2009 tax return and a summary of asset values. If they are they somewhere with internet access they can enter the financial data for you. Takes a few minutes.

lol i wish they had internet, my parents are missionaries in Africa right now.

I appreciate all the help! thank you again

Do not wait!!! Contact your school’s financial aid office & explain the situation. They will advise you on how to proceed. You might POSSIBLY be granted a dependency override if you can document that you have no way to reach them for the info you need - it’s worth asking.
