FAFSA for graduate/medical school

When a student is applying for financial aid for medical school or graduate school, the FAFSA still asks for parents' financial information. Is there still an expected contribution from the parents? I had no problem paying for undergraduate education, but for medical school I hoped he would qualify for his own aid.

When a student is applying to GRADUATE school, they already have their bachelor's degree and do not provide parent information UNLESS THE SCHOOL REQUIRES IT. This is sometimes the case with medical school and law school, but I'm not sure it is the case with other masters or graduate programs. You need to find out what the specific medical schools require in terms of financial aid information. It varies. Also, you should know that finaid for graduate programs is VERY different than finaid for undergrads. Even if you child has an EFC of 0, there is no guarantee of full need being met in most graduate programs. There is no federal aid for grad students (that I can think of other than Stafford loans), and most aid is institutional aid in the form of grants, scholarships, fellowships and assistantships. Shorter answer...medical schools and law schools do ask for parent information in some cases, and assume a contribution. Check with each school for the specifics.

If the graduate school use only the FAFSA, you would not provide any parental information, as the FAFSA automatically provides a skip for all parental questions IF you answer te qualifying questions correctly.

There are graduate programs that do ask for parental financial info and do take it into consideration. Usually, that is when they are giving out grants, as loans are available to all grad student who qualify on their own financial situation. There are VERY FEW grants for grad students as compared to undergrads, particularly for the professional schools. PHD programs often offer packages with stipends where the student has to work for the money as an assistant, teacher, researcher, etc.
