^If admitted to ~100% need colleges such as Colby, this student wouldn’t have to pay tuition nor room&board . First gen and lower income status would factor into the reading of his/her stats and with 1900, s/he has a shot.
I agree with the strategy of applying to some places where she has a shot.
But in addition, she should be looking at public universities in her state to which she can commute…just in case the others don’t pan out.
I agree, that’s why I said, first, Rutgers + TCNJ.
Rutgers and TCNJ are the two most expensive public universities in NJ. There are a number of less expensive four year public universities in NJ. She should be looking at those.
Rutgers is going to be a financial stretch. So is TCNJ.
I think he/she can possibly make it, though, see the NPC I ran. Yes it is very tight. Pitt has started scholarships notification but they won’t be finished until Mar.

Robp, so you have a relative who is a moron and you don’t mind taking advantage of that and ruining them financially while you are at it. Well don’t count on that. Get your ducks in order and get some applications in.
Private loans with cosigners come from Banks, not the colleges or the govt. Banks want their money back, so they aren’t going to take a huge risk with no collateral. You don’t seem to understand that your Gap is huge and that is way too much money to borrow for an undergraduate degree. People paying that amount have saved it up over the 18 years they were raising a child.
@thumper1 Yes but from what I’ve heard Rutgers is generous with ISS and a friend of mine in a similar financial situation has received an affordable tuition.
You won’t know what the Rutgers package is until you get it. But remember…the school does not guarantee to meet full need. It’s not the least expensive option. It sounds like you are expecting sufficient aid to cover all costs to,attend.
I strongly urge you to apply to places where you can commute…so that you don’t have room and board costs. And apply to the less expensive public universities in your state. Rutgers is the most costly instate school for you.
It would be smart to,cover your bases with less expensive options.
What university is within commutable distance (30mn one way on good days), either by car or by public transportation?
Remember to apply widely to ~100% need universities from this list:

As a lower income student you get a fee waiver (make sure your guidance counselor has checked the box too.) Apply widely, including women’s colleges if you’re a girl.
