On the fafsa, regarding the question that asks if the student has received grants, is that asking about the grants the student is receiving this year from their school?

bump! (10 char)

Which question is that? The only place I can think of where that question is asked is worksheet C. If that is what you are talking about the only grants you put there are those that you had to report as income on your tax return. That amount is then deducted by FAFSA from your AGI (Annual Gross Income) so it does not affect your financial aid. If none of your scholarships/grants were taxable then you do not put anything .

For instance of my Daughters grants/scholarships $x000 were taxable (they were in excess of her tuition, fees and books) so they had to be reported on her tax return and therefore increased her AGI by $X000. We list the $X000 on worksheet C and , for financial aid purposes, her AGI will be reduced by $X000 thus not affecting her financial aid.
