FAFSA help, dad lost job early this year

The situation is that my father lost his job Jan. 2011, very recently. I applied for the FAFSA for the 2010-2011 school year last year, and was denied due to the income my parents make. When filling out the 2011-2012 FAFSA, you have to state the income from 2010. Now in my case, that would be the same as the previous year, making me ineligible again. I was wondering has anyone else been in this situation, and what did you do? I have spoken to FAFSA and they said I have to either look to scholarships or private loans. The university I attend, UCSD, has agreed to give me a certain amount if my dad has been unemployed for 10 weeks or more. The amount is not enough to cover 1 quarter of tuition, and so I don't know how I will being paying for university next year. Thanks in advance for all your help.

FYI: my parents are trying to avoid loans as much as possible

You have to ask your school for a special circumstances adjustment. What they do will depend on their policies. A lot of schools will not make an adjustment until the unemployment has been ongoing for a certain length of time.

thanks I will do that. thanks for the help

Your parents may have no other choice…otherwise you’ll have to take a break in your education.

Since your dad only recently lost his job, there’s a possibility that he will find other work soon.
