FAFSA help! Parents separated but married?

Okay, so my parents have been separated since 2010 and live in separate households; I currently live with my mother, but my father does help pay some of the bills. They DID file jointly on their taxes because of financial reasons.

My question is this, on my FAFSA do I put that my parents are separated or married? Does it matter that they filled jointly and my father contributes to the household? I heard that I can put separated and only put my mother's financial information. Please help, I've been wondering what to do for the longest time!! I'm hoping that someone else has been in this situation before and can guide me in the right direction.

You put down the income and the assets of your custodial parent (mom). you must also include any child support/alimony paid to your mom

Thanks sybbie!
