So here's the deal, I know if your parents were never married but remarried you have to put the spouse of the parent you live with. However in my case, I live with my mother and her husband. But my blood parents share joint custody. While I understand that I have to put my stepfather, he quite frankly has nothing to do with my financial need. Nor does he make payments toward the house I live in and such. And with his salary it'd be a less chance of receiving financial aid. So my question is, is there any way FAFSA takes this in consideration or a way to go around it? Thank you!

For FAFSA you will use the financial information of the parent who you live with most of the time. In your case, this means you mother’s income and you and step-father’s income will be reported. Print out the FAFSA formula itself, and work through it with your mom and step-father to see what your numbers look like: http://studentaid.ed.gov/sites/default/files/2012-13-efc-forumula.pdf

Then do it with your dad using his income (and his wife’s if he has one). If the results are very different, and if moving in with your dad right now would mean that you will have spent at least 51% of the year with him by the end of December, it may make sense to do just that.
