We put that my daughter would not file taxes on the fafsa but found out she can get back 200.00 Should we file or is it better to not file. She is not required to file a federal form. If we file will the added money in the fafsa hurt her more than the 200.00 will help? Does anyone know? We need the financial aid so I don't want her income to count against her. She did not file last year. can anyone out there help with this?

You have to include your daughter’s income whether she files taxes or not…it’s still income that is required to be reported on the FAFSA. Did you NOT include this income on the fafsa you filed? She should file the taxes and get her refund. I think you can probably change the FAFSA to reflect that she has filed.

You have to report her income on fafsa regardless of whether she files a tax return or not. So have her file to get the withholding back.

Agreed. The income should have been reported, regardless of whether or not she was required to file a return. Go back and include her income, as well as her taxes paid (which I assume will be 0, given the refund). I am guessing she didn’t make a lot, so the income won’t have much of an effect.

Thank you all so much I will go back and fix the fafsa.
