Hello I applied online for fafsa and i got a confirmation email and I also got an email saying that I should apply to tap.

What's the difference between tap and pell grant and which one should i apply to ? and how do i apply?

and also can i get both?

Yes you can get both if you live in NY and qualify.

TAP is a NY state aid and Pell is a federal aid.

Pell Grant is federal. TAP is a New York grant. You can get both.

You applied for the Pell Grant when you filled out and submitted your FAFSA. Once the college/ university receives it and processes it, the school will award you the money in your financial aid package.

You need to apply for the TAP separately. Here are directions for that:
[Apply for TAP Now](http://www.hesc.ny.gov/content.nsf/CA/Apply_for_TAP_Now)

I know pell grant you receive once a year, is that the case for tap as well?

you will receive tap/ peel depending on your school schedule. If you attend school on a semester system, then you will receive an allocation/credit to your account once a semester.

Since you did not apply for Tap, when you did the FAFSA, you must now wait a few days then go to the TAP website and apply for TAP

Fashion…are you starting college in January?

For what school year are you applying? The fafsa available now is for the school year that started in fall 2013. It would be the correct one to file if you are starting school in January. If you are going to start college in fall 2014, you have to wait until Jan. 1, 2014 when the 2014-15 fafsa will become available.

I am starting school in January

You don’t receive Pell once a year. Your Pell for the school year is split into the number of terms in your school year. For instance if your Pell eligibility for the year is $4500, you would receive $2250 a semester in a semester system or $1500 a quarter in a quarter system.

If you are starting school in January you can still only receive the semester’s worth of Pell in the spring semester even though you did not attend in the fall.

this was very helpful thanks!

fashiongal,

If there is a federal student loan in your financial aid package, since you are starting in the second semester they might give you a whole year worth of loan, not just a semester’s worth. So please don’t think that that loan amount is what you can get every semester! Be sure to talk with them about it so you know what to expect in future semesters.
