Fafsa Help

Okay im in a weird boat so ill just explain my situation. My mother is illegal and hasnt worked in the past 3 years. She has been in a realtionship with the same man for the last 18 years he is also illegal , but they are not married and he is not my father. So how will i go by in filling out my fafsa ?

If you are a citizen or have a legal status, you can complete the FAFSA. Your mother (you live with her?) will not be able to get a FSA ID, so will not be able to complete the forms online. She will need to print out the forms, sign them, and send them in. Start the process early because this will all take more time.

The non-father partner will not be a factor, unless she is asked to verify how she supports herself and you, then she’ll have to disclose where she gets her support.

Yes im a us citizen, so how will i go by approaching the irs side of the fafsa , last year that’s where i had the problem since my mom hasn’t filed taxes last 3 years

Can she can file a non-filer affidavit, stating why she hasn’t filed (not required because she hasn’t worked, under the amount required for filing)?

What did you do last year?

I didnt do anything i didnt recieve fafsa last year the whole process seemed so complicated in my position so i payed for classes through a bog waiver and had to buy books out of my pocket i worked part time last year, the last time i revieced fafsa was about 2 years ago and that was through a technical school they helped me fill it out and they accepted me the follwoing years ive been trying to get fafsa and I always fail

It makes me unbelievably sad to hear this … and it happens so very often. Don’t leave money on the table … always file a FAFSA! Now that you know about CC, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

If your mother is not required to file a tax return (that is, she earns less than the minimum amount required for filing taxes), she will just enter her income information (if it’s 0, she’ll put 0). If you are later selected for verification, she can request a Verification of Non-Filing Letter (https://www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-return-transcript-types-and-ways-to-order-them). Since you’ll be using 2015 income, she can go ahead and request that just in case - that way, if you are asked for it, you’ll already have it. You can request yours, too, if you didn’t file taxes. Your household size will be you and your mom… do not include her partner or his kids (if he has any). Do you have sisters or brothers who live with you? If so, you may or may not be able to include them in the household size.

Follow through on this. Pell grants and other aid is meant for low income students like you.

Yes I have 5 siblings , I know my mom gets goverment help since my younger brother is autistic , so I should apply to fafsa through a household size of two just including me and my mom ?

Wait…how old are your five siblings? Do they live with you? If so…you would include them in your household size.

Also…since your mom is undocumented…I’m guessing it’s your brother who gets the government help…not your mom.

Okay … if there is no father paying more than 50% of a kid’s support, and if they all live with your mom, they can be counted in the household. If your mom gets child support for any of the kids, that has to be reported as child support received. If your brother gets government assistance intended just for him, that does not get reported as income.

If you are willing to share your city/state, maybe I can help you find assistance in completing your FAFSA (can you PM me? Not sure if you have enough posts yet to do that).

Okay my siblings are 17, 13, 8, 2, and the other is a baby my mom hasnt worked her last 3 years since she had the 2 year old mom doesnt recieve child support all kids are from her long term boyfriend my mom recieves help i dont know exactly what kind but i know she gets it from my 8 year old autistic brother , I live in California, my moms boyfriend makes around 40,000 a year but he and my mom never married so i dont have to put him in my fafsa ? I have no clue guys

This boyfriend is NOT your father. He doesn’t get listed on your FAFSA.

Your siblings would count as members of your household.

When you do your FAFSA, do as @kelsmom indicated. You will indicate your mim’s incime as $0. You should also get a non-filers statement for her to complete from each college you apply to. Complete that and submit also.

I will say…with a family of six, and $0 income, you will very likely get selected for verification by the college. They will want to know how your mom supports her five children and herself…you know…basic living exoenses like rent, food, utilities, clothing, etc. you will have to provide documentation of how these expenses are being met.

By providing documnetation do i have to include my moms boyfriend that is how her livinh expenses are paid by him

Only include the boyfriend if asked. Answer the questions asked When you get the verification forms, it may ask how she’s supporting herself. She’ll then report the special aid she gets for the 8 year old, and any other sources of income, including that she doesn’t pay rent.

You will likely have to show the school how you are living from day to day with ZERO income.

No…you won’t include your mom’s boyfriend on your FAFSA…but they WILL likely want to know where the money is coming from to support 6 people…with $0 in income.

Okay so im starting to get more of an idea of what to do so when im aplying to fafsa i will put me and my mom with a social of 000-00-0000 put $0 of income put my income for 2015 print a paper that my mom needs to sign and mail it. Wjat im having trouble with is the nonfiler thing do i get that at the college im attending or is that a part of the fafsa application you do online ?

I believe if you are a U.S. citizen (you…the student) you will need to use YOUR social security number. It’s your mom who, will use zeros. She isn’t a citizens I she can’t get a SS number.

@kelsmom Correct me if I’m wrong…but I believe this U.S. Citizen student must have a SS number to enter on the FAFSA.

Go to the college website and do a search for non-filers statement. It is not part of the fafsa, and will need to be done for each college.

Yes, the student should have an SSN for the FAFSA.

Some colleges require a Verification of Non-Filing Letter (see the IRS link above) for anyone who says they didn’t file taxes … you should check the school’s website to see what is specifically requested for verification when a tax return was not filed. Sometimes it’s a form, sometimes it’s the Non-Filing Letter.

Questions 75-79 ask about federal assistance programs from which your family might receive benefits. If your family receives any of these, make sure to mark them.

Im gonna try filling the fafsa out right now can the fafsa be started right now

So i started filling it out so do i put just me and my mother with $0 income or me and my mothet and 5 siblings with $0

If your mother supports those 5 kids, she can claim them. She doesn’t have to claim them on taxes, but she has to provide support to them. From what you’ve described, she is supporting them.
