Could someone please answer the following questions regarding filling out the FAFSA or direct me to a previous link where this info. is covered.

Can you and your parents get a PIN now for the 2008-2009 FAFSA?

I've heard lots of people say they have already filled out the FAFSA for the school year 2008-2009-how can this be when the form requires tax information from W-2s not received yet??

Do people estimate their tax info instead of waiting for W2s which may come as late as Feb. from employers, which makes it difficult to get the FAFSA done on Jan. 1 as recommended?

you can fill out fafsa online starting Jan 1st
However- you may be able to get paper forms at libraries to fill out in advance.
Wont be processed till Jan however.
Perhaps they were talking of PROFILE?

You can get your PINs now. Put them in a safe place as you will use them for all federal finaid "stuff" for as long as you need to (renewal FAFSA as well as Stafford and Perkins loan sign ins).

Hi LoPro - employers have to mail the W-2's by Jan. 31, so the latest you can get them is early February. You can actually send off the FAFSA in January if you have good estimates of income, taxes owed, etc. based on pay stubs and other records you keep, but then you would need to update the FAFSA with the real numbers when you have them. If you took this approach, you would want to make sure your numbers weren't too far off, and you'd want to do the updates as soon as possible.

You can use the FAFSA 4caster (fafsa4caster.org) right now to get an idea of what you might qualify for based on your estimated numbers for 2007. The 4caster asks about 2006, but wherever they do that, just use 2007 instead. They'll come up with an estimated Expected Family Contribution for you, and based on that, estimated federal grants, loans, and work study. It's a good way to get a head start on understanding the FAFSA questions.
