FAFSA in Florida...

Does anyone know if I can still apply? The website lists May 15th is the Florida deadline, but I'm really confused as to what that means. I assumed you could apply pretty much year round. If I am able to apply this year,do you think I'd be able to recieve my financial aid in time to pay for fall classes?

I believe you can file the FAFSA any time during the academic year but you would only be guaranteed the Stafford loans…and the Pell Grant if you were eligible for one.

Are you a resident of Florida? Do you qualify for Bright Futures?

Why not just get your app in now? It won’t take long to file.

^^ Well, it’s past May 15th so that’s the issue.

Many states use the FAFSA to determine to whom to give their state aid. So the state deadline on the FAFSA is for state aid, not federal aid (like the Pell or Stafford). So you would still get the federal aid for which you qualify but you are probably out of luck for additional state money.

For Florida specifically, the May 15 deadline does not apply to Bright Futures so you are still in the running for that. See here:

NEW - The submission of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now an annual requirement for Bright Futures eligibility. Note: The student’s FAFSA does not have to indicate need; however, must be complete and processed error free prior to a student’s first disbursement of an award. (The Florida State Programs May 15 deadline does not apply to Bright Futures.)
