I'm trying to fill out my FAFSA but it's telling me I'm using an incompatible browser. I've tried using Safari 5.1.2 and Google Chrome, both of which are allegedly compatible according to the error screen. Do I really need to go download crappy Internet Explorer on my Mac just to be able to fill out my FAFSA? Is that not ridiculous?

Isn’t Firefox an option this year? I have a mac and have filled it out using Safari for the last 5 years with no troubles. I haven’t logged in yet, today, though.

I’ve always used Safari- I just ignore messages- haven’t logged in this year.

I just downloaded Firefox, too and tried it… same issue. Not sure how to get around this, to be honest, and if I’m the only one it’s happening to then I’m really worried.

try dumping the cache & resetting Safari- then restart

Have you mended your pref files lately?

SeekingUni,

I just logged in using Safari 5. Which Browser version do you normally have?

Have you tried clearing your browser cache?

I didn’t try that, but I just gave up and am working on it on a different computer. Windows with Firefox. Not sure why it’s not working on mine though. Are you using Safari on a Mac or Windows?

Safari on Mac.

DH and son completed it this morning. They called the toll free number. Apparently, they had to list the fafsa site as a “trusted site”, which solved the problem.

Last year, FAFSA hated Google Chrome on PC so I ran it with Firefox. Have not tried to access FAFSA with Happykid’s Mac, but thanks for the heads-up! I’ll just be sure to do it on the PC instead.

For the first time in my life I’ve had to use the PC over the MAC… The world really must be ending in 2012!

The world really isn’t going to end if you aren’t doing normal maintenance on your computer.
However- it can cause unnecessary trouble.

For the record, clearing the cache did absolutely nothing. That obviously isn’t the problem if the issue persists on three different browsers, one of which was just installed and the other is never used.

But what normal maintenance do you do?
Do you repair permissions- defrag your drive, dump old log files?
What about resetting Safari and restarting?

Internet Explorer for Mac exists in Mac OS 9. Even then its Internet Explorer 5.0

And seriously this is no big deal. FAFSA thinks Firefox 10 is incompatible but it works perfectly for me.

FAFSA thinks Firefox 10 is incompatible but it works perfectly for me.

I get the same message also
But still works.
( Funny though that they wouldn’t fix this- since this bug has been part of FAFSA for years & since more people have Macs now I expect than 12 years ago when I first did the FAFSA & I don’t use Explorer)

I got knocked off FAFSA. They are doing some maintenance.

I got back on FAFSA. Even though I also got that message about incompatible browser, it still worked fine. I just cleared cache, logged back on and finished the session.

One thing that I want to remind you to do is while you are working, to go to the bottom of the screen and click “save”. Sometimes, it will time you out. Don’t want to re-input all the data each time, so make sure you do that after typing in a bunch of data. Don’t click “next page” until you do it, either.

Also, remember to go back in and correct it asap as soon as you have the entire 2011 tax forms complete. This could alter your financial aid package for the better or worse, so make sure you do it early. (Don’t wait till April!)

No big deal? I can’t even access the site… This happens on all three browsers:

I was having the same problem on my Mac. The tip in message #8 here: [FAFSA and Netflix Not Working in Lion - MacRumors Forums](<a href=“FAFSA and Netflix Not Working in Lion | MacRumors Forums”>FAFSA and Netflix Not Working in Lion | MacRumors Forums) worked for me. Copy, in case the link doesn’t work (and I chose Safari 5.1 Mac from the Develop User bar):

–Just ran into the same problem, and found a little workaround. Go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Click ‘Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar’ After you do that, click on the Develop button > User Agent > I chose Opera 11.11 for Windows. After that, works fine. You have to reload it a few times and make sure it’s not on auto detect.–
