FAFSA-Independent Question

Under FAFSA dependency requirements, I qualify for this part:
*Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2016?

However, does it matter that 3/4 of my income comes from my parents even though I used that money to support myself and my SO who was worse off than me, financially speaking?

I made about $2000 in income for the previous year, but my parents “gifted” me $6000 in total for 2014.

Other factors that may weigh in:
My parents don’t claim me on their taxes.
I am also a recent divorcee (2013).
I am 24 years old, but I was born in 1991.

Also, do I have to prove that my significant other depends on my money to pay for his cost of living. I get paid cash doing Nanny work and didn’t make enough in wages to file for a tax return this year. Since I get paid in cash, I give it to him and he deposits it into his checking account or goes to a grocery store (or wherever) and spends my money in that manner. Thus, it’s not like we can prove that he is my dependent through bank account statements.

Thanks in advance!

Yes it does. That makes you a dependent. Your spouse does not receive >1/2 support from you but from your parents.

The 24 year old part, though, does make you independent for the upcoming school year. That’s all you need.

I don’t believe that is a dependent, however it seems your age puts you independent as this is the question asked for 2015-16 where a yes qualifies you:

Were you born before Jan. 1, 1992?

You are independent because of your age.

NVM I figured it out LOL
Thank you

Since I was born before 1992, the “gift” from my parents is exempt from determining my dependency?

1991 came BEFORE 1992.

I seriously hope you are kidding that you didn’t understand that!

Yes, you’re now “independent” regardless of how much support you receive from your parents.

Yes, it does. While you are independent on the FAFSA, you must include monies paid by your parents on your behalf.
