3 weeks have passed since my mom filled taxes but when I try to use the retrieval tool, it can't find the tax return. what does this mean?

How did she file, efile or paper? It can take up to 3 weeks with paper filing. Also, if she claimed an education credit, the IRS only started processing returns with education credits on 2/14. There are a few other forms that have delayed processing too.

she did online and i think she did do education credit

I started to make corrections today and thought the IRS retrieval tool will work but it seems like I have to wait for another week…

The irs site has a ‘where’s my refund’ option. If your mom is getting a refund you could check there. It may give an idea of whether her return has been processed.

http://www.irs.gov/Refunds/Where’s-My-Refund-It’s-Quick,-Easy,-and-Secure.

You could also go to the irs tax return transcript ordering site. I think you can find out if a transcript is available to be ordered for 2012 without actually ordering one. It may give you another clue as to processing status.

[Order a Transcript](Get Transcript | Internal Revenue Service)

Once one of those shows it’s been processed, you could wait a day or two and see if fafsa works.
