I didn't know that parents also needed a pin (gahh... I feel stupid) and so now I've missed the deadline for the FAFSA for Caltech. I don't expect to get the PIN through e-mail until Tuesday, since Monday is a holiday, and so the FAFSA also won't be turned in until Tuesday. Should I write an e-mail to the financial aid office telling them?

Write a short note, but they won't care.

Don't worry collegebound, I'm also in the same boat (along with a bunch of other people I know). I knew I had to get a PIN, so I did get one early.. but I didn't know that I also had to get a PIN for my parents. Yeah I'll go write them a short note or something. =

Yeah, I'm in the same situation too. I would've had the PIN for my mom on time, but I must have messed up the security question--and three incorrect tries forces you to reapply (and wait three business days) for a new PIN.

Looks like Caltech's Financial Aid office will be getting lots of "short notes." :)

Are you guys sending the 'short note' now or when you actually fill it out?

Crap, I was totally under the impression that it was due Feb 1 and just started today. Am I screwed out of getting financial aid?

I'll be sending mine today.

bachikarn: doesn't take that long to do... you can probably get in with most of the rest of the late people. :)

This might be a dumb question, but how did you write your note? Can it be brief, just saying that the FAFSA was turned in late because of PIN problems?

Caltech Financial Aid Office:

I'm writing to inform you that my FAFSA will be submitted and processed after your January 15 deadline for my Financial Aid Application as an applicant for freshman admission in Fall 2005. I hope that this does not present any inconvenience to normal office procedures. My FAFSA will be filed as soon as my parent receives a PIN number to digitally sign the FAFSA form. Please feel free to email me at nsantorello@optonline.net if you have questions/concerns or need to contact me for any reason due to the late submission of this documentation. Again, I apologize.

Sincerely,
Noah Santorello

That's what mine looked like, and the response looked like this:

Noah,

Don't worry, please submit the form as soon as you can. Your file will
still be reviewed for eligibility.
