I had some nervous moments today and thought I'd share my lesson learned in case it helps someone else out.

My son applied to more than 10 schools. You can only submit a maximum of 10 school requests at once on FAFSA. The requests have to be processed before you can delete schools, and then add the additional schools. Being the organized folks we are ;), we made an alphabetical list of his schools complete with school codes and went right down that list filling in the FAFSA form, submitting it for processing.

Well.

Until that form is processed you can't update the schools. Two of his schools have a Feb. 15th deadline, and the others were all Feb. 1. FAFSA is zipping right along with processing, and his form was processed in less than 24 hours. However, I was nail biting wondering if it would take longer and we would miss those last two schools' deadline. I was kicking myself for not having left the later schools till, well, later. If FAFSA is like the Common Application, things could slow down as the big deadlines draw near. So, if you have more than 10 schools, check the schools' deadlines as you fill out the form and triage. It probably won't be a problem, but your fingernails will thank you.

so i can delete any of the previous ten schools i applied (after they have been processed) and those schools will still have access to my FAFSA?

Um I just made that mistake right before I read this thread 2blue. Literally...I just finished my FAFSA and did it alphabetically instead of by due date. D'oh!

Hi - I am still confused about how to add the addtional schools. Hopefully someone can give me more clarity.

First of all, I still need to update FAFSA with 2007 actual data. Is it still ok to delete the schools and add the additional schools before the updates/corrections are done?

Secondly, when I went back into FAFSA to see how to delete the schools, FAFSA had a note that if you delete the school, the SAR will not be sent to any deleted school.

(And by the way, the SAR is ready and online.)

Oh one more thing, when we logged into on of the college account, the colleges said that they have not uploaded the SAR yet and will do so before March 1st. They also have not checked off the receipt FAFSA even though it has already been processed before their deadline. Does this mean that if they wait so long to upload the FAFSA report, and I delete them, that they will not have access to the SAR??

Sorry for all the questions, but we are very confused about all this!

It seems you can delete old schools after 3-5 days and then add new schools. Here is an excerpt of the online chat I had with a FAFSA representative:

Parent: I want to send FAFSA to more than 10 schools. How can I know which schools have downloaded my FAFSA so that I can delete them and then add other schools online?
I would request that up to 15 schools should be allowed without the problem of 10 school limit.
FAFSA representative: 3-5days after you submitted it, it should be processed and ready for you to delete five of those first ten
Parent: Can I be certain that after about 1 week I can delete the old schools and add new ones?
FAFSA rep: yes after those 3-5days

I wish FAFSA had put this info on their web.

It doesn’t matter whether or not the school has downloaded the FAFSA yet. What matters is that the transaction has processed. The school will get every transaction you send to that school code, even if they don’t download until a later date.

My suggestion to everyone is to delete ALL schools before sending to more. Schools not on the list will not receive the new transaction. You can keep track of which schools were on #1 and which were on #2. It makes it easier to do updates later on if that’s necessary.

How do I add more schools (after initial 10) and update tax info. Do I send to next 6 schools first (taxes not completed yet and feb 15 deadlines approaching) then update taxes for first 10 schools and again update taxes for next six schools? This is very confusing. Thanks for any help.

Yes, we had our SAR and email saying my twins Fafsa was processed one day later (but this was over a week ago) I deleted the original schools and added a few more. I know that some received both because my girls have an “accepted student ID” and it is checked. There is a delete school fuction on the fafsa page where you choose what fafsa you want.
Later, when you make corrections, using the “make corrections” function, you do the same thing When your child knows where they are going, you only have to do it for that school.

One question sort of remains unanswered though. If you delete the 10 schools while in “will file” status, then what do you do when you have your final info and need to update? Will the info automatically be sent to all 10 (+) schools, or will those schools have to be added back on (after deleting the additional schools) and resend, then add on the 11th(+) schools and send to them?

I was wondering whether you could help me with the same problem that you had. We filed FAFSA and still need to send in tax info-however, I have five more schools to send to. What did you end up doing and did it work?

I’m really confused. So, I did the FAFSA on the 2nd and got the email saying my SAR is ready on the 3rd. I deleted all my schools on 8th and added 5 new ones. One of the schools that has a financial aid checklist said that they never received my FAFSA. If this doesn’t change, will I have to add back all 10 schools that I deleted before?

My daughter has 17 schools to send FAFSA to. On web I have now 2 SARs. I believe once my tax return is filed I will go separately to each of them to update and submit one by one in sequence (waiting 3-5 days until first corrections are processed, then go ahead with next one).
