FAFSA - not 18 yet so what to do for the selective service part

My son is only 17 and the university he was accepted to says he needs to complete the selective service portion of the FAFSA before applying for financial aid. He is only 17 so not sure what to do about that…it says he is too young.

Many high school senior boys are only 17 right now. There still a way to do this.

Are you saying that you’re trying to fill it out and it won’t let you proceed ?

I think you’re supposed to indicate yes, and then it will register automatically when 18

@kelsmom

That’s what DS did last year when he was a hs senior. The registration card arrived right around his birthday.

Is there a ‘not applicable’ option? If so, check that. When I apply for federal jobs, that’s what I (a female) check, and also what someone who is not in the correct age group would check. Or is the questioned worded like ‘have you registered IF REQUIRED?’ If so, you can check yes because you aren’t required to yet. Next year, when he reapplies and is 18, it will pick up that he must register.

Ah, no. A question like that would only be checked “yes” if the person was required to register and did in fact register.

You can’t indicate yes unless he’s already registered but there has to be a way to say yes to being registered when 18. His guidance counselor should understand the forms. I used to work on this for the FAFSA with applicants but it’s been awhile. In some states future registration is tied to getting a driver’s license.
