FAFSA Parent Pin. How long does it take?

I didn't know I needed a parental PIN as well to sumbit my FAFSA. I'm currently on the eve of the Feb 1 Deadline and I just submited a request for a parental pin. How long will it take?

Thanks!

If you applied online, it'll take 2-3 days. If you have spam blocker, be sure to check your spam folder just in case the message that your pin is availabe gets hung up there.

If you think you might miss a deadline, call the school and explain what happened and ask for an extension. Be sure to always try to talk with the same person. Take down name, date, time of day. Be polite, not panicky, and very appreciative of any help they offer.

Uh oh. If I can't make the Feb 1 deadline because my pin doesn't arrive, what will happen? Does this mean I don't get aid?

Have the FAFSA all filled out and ready to go so that all you have to do is electronically sign with the pins and transmit.

Don't sit and panic, call the college and solicit their help. Ask them what to do. Very often they will work with you. Listen carefully to what they tell you, and do it right away. Ask if you can FAX anything in advance. Do anything and everything. Show willingness to do everything they ask. If there are extenuating circumstance, like parents can't help, or immigrant status, etc. carefully mention that you have had to shoulder this alone. But don't whine. Just clinically explain, then ask for their assistance in completing the work ASAP.

Sadly, this is a lesson that will serve you well in college. You are your own bottom line. You must learn to define the task and manage every aspect of it to ensure that it is fully completed on time. Good luck. I wish you the best.
