FAFSA parents separated

On the FAFSA form I filled out, I had put my parents were separated and therefore I only provided the income for the parent who I live with. This parent is considered low income. Is this okay that I only provided info for one parent? It did ask me to choose which parent I wanted to put info for. Also, is this why im being selected for financial aid verification by my school?

IF you read the instruction, you would know that the parent to choose as the custodial parent for FAFSA would be the one with whom you lived the most in the 12 months before you filled out the form. Only one parent’s financials are requested when parents are separated.

I don’t know why you are being selected for verification, but you can ask the financial aid department that question. Some schools verfiy everyone, some with certain criteria, some randomly, though all will pull anything with flags. There are many, many kids with just a single parent on the FAFSA, so that alone is not going to be a special flag unless that specific school defines it as such. At my son’s school, everyone undergoes verification the first time they file the FAFSA We had to undergo the process even though my son was just taking an unsub loan, and our tax info, our income, none of the things had anything to do with whether he could take out the loan. Need was not involved. But we still had to toe the line and come up with info requested by them. We are a two parent family also. It was just a the way their school did things.

Did you include the money that the other parent provides for support (child support, spousal support, etc)?

If you only listed a very low income, and your custodial parent is still getting money to pay rent, food, etc, then just using that low income wouldnt be accurate.

There is no child support etc being paid or any other support. Oh okay got it. Thanks for the help @cptofthehouse and @mom2collegekids

My university system randomly selects freshmen for income verification every year. Once selected, you must go through the process each year. I was one of the lucky ones. Don’t worry, it’s just another form to fill out. You’ll still get your aid as long as you don’t lie about your income.
