FAFSA/PIN help?????

Hey guys, so my story gets kind of complicated so I'll try to be as clear as I can be. Any help will be appreciated. So, sometime in February, I began my FAFSA application. However, as I didn't have my parents income tax information, I decided to save it and come back to it later. Well, the problem began next time I attempted to sign in. I put in my first and last names, along with my Social Security number, but for some reason, when I logged in, my application was blank. At first I thought this was kind of weird but I didn't think much of it. I simply assumed there was a mistake and the system did not save it. Anyways, this time I had the income tax information and I completed the application. At the end, I was given a temporary PIN and I signed it. However, a few days later, I received an e-mail stating that my identity could not be confirmed by the Social Security Administration. Obviously this freaked me out, but upon closer inspection I realized that I signed up for the PIN with my last name as my first and my first name as my last (ex. Doe John). That's why it couldn't verify my identity. Anyways, I signed up for another PIN, this time with the correct name (ex. John Doe), but when I tried to sign in to the application, it would not let me. Remember how I inadvertently created a "backwards pin:" THAT'S BECAUSE I COMPLETED MY WHOLE FAFSA AS DOE JOHN. So now, I could not get into my FAFSA with my "real" PIN because the names on the PIN and the FAFSA did not match. AND I could not get into it with my "fake" PIN because the SSA could not confirm my identity. I had effectively locked myself out of my online application, so I had to fill out an SSR and the correct information was sent to my future university in paper (so they still received my FAFSA) Well, the problem I have now is that to apply for federal loans, I need my PIN. I can't use my fake one because my name is not Doe John, and I can't use my real one because it is tied to the original application (the one I left incomplete and thought that did not save). I'm really freaking out and I hope that someone can give me advice on what to do. Again, any help is appreciated.

No, your PIN is not tied to your original application - FAFSA and loans are two different things. You will not be able to do anything with the 14-15 FAFSA electronically - I assume you sent a paper signature & the school fixed your name on the FAFSA themselves. They cannot send out a loan with the wrong name, so that will be correct. Just go to www.pin.ed.gov and request a PIN. Get a PIN with your correct name, and use that for your loans.

Hey thanks for answering my question but if I already have a PIN under my correct name, can’t I just use that one? Or is it necessary to request a new one? I assume the site is going to tell me I already have a PIN when I try to request one.

If you have a PIN under your correct name, yes, use that one.
