Why do I hear (maybe I'm wrong) people saying that they made separate Fafsa pins both them or their parents?

Do I only need one?

Why do I hear (maybe I'm wrong) people saying that they made separate Fafsa pins both them or their parents?

Do I only need one?

?......?......?

If you're a dependent student (i.e., your parents will help pay your tuition), then both you and your parent (your mom or dad, doesn't have to be both) need to get a PIN number. For example, both you and your mom would need a PIN number.

That's because FAFSA will have to use your parent's financial information in order to determine your financial aid package.

Now if you're an independent student--and you probably aren't (you earn your own money, you won't use your parent's money for college), then only you need a PIN number. Your parents won't need one because they won't be providing financial information.

So I need to get two? or can I make one for the both of us?

If I need two separate ones, then do I have to fill out two FAFSA's? also...my mother doesn't have an email account, can I get both pins sent to my email?

For the FAFSA...ONE parent needs a PIN number AND the student needs a PIN number. These are used to electronically access and sign your FAFSA. The FAFSA is filled out in the name of the STUDENT, with student and parent(s) filling in information. ONLY ONE PARENT needs a FAFSA Pin...not two separate ones. You fill out only one FAFSA. The FAFSA is to provide financial information that is relevant for the student and includes information from the student and custodial parent(s).

I don't think the FAFSA website cares where your PINs get sent. We used the same email address to ask for both the parent and student one.

You need two PINs. One for the student, and one for the parent, if you are a dependent. You only fill out one form, but you electronically sign it with both PINs. You can have the PINs and the form sent to whatever email you like.

Keep in mind that student and parental PINS should be kept in a safe place as they are to be used year after year. If you dont save them, you can get new ones but it can take a few days to get them which could be a problem if you're filing FAFSA near an aid deadline.

thanks.....

I just set up my PIN successfully (through the instant method). I cleared my cache, exited the browser, reopened it, and tried to set one up for one of my parents. After we filled out all of the information, though, it said that I had already applied for a PIN (ie my dad wasn't able to get a PIN). What am I doing wrong?
