If I requested the FAFSA PIN today, can I immediately use it or do I have to wait until they email me?

If you already have the PIN, then use it.

I just called them and they told me to wait 3 days to be safe. I'm not sure what to do because I want to submit mine as soon as possible.

You can fill out the FAFSA, save it, and then when the PIN comes, sign it and send it off. A couple of days should really not matter. I know the feeling of wanting it done and out of the mind, though!

I applied for our PIN over three days ago - one for my son and one for me, and have heard nothing. I am able to save the FAFSA because I chose the PIN. If I slected the PIN, and am able to save online do I assume everything is okay and we can electronically sign the FAFSA when done, or do I need some kind of email confirmation of the PIN?

Thanks....

The number you select use for saving your FAFSA is not necessarily the same as you PIN (though can be if you choose the same number as your PIN). You can pick any number to use as a password. So being able to save the FAFSA does not mean your PIN is ok. You could try signing it and see if it works. Just check back and make sure it has actually processed.

We did have issues with my son's PIN last year. It was frustrating to say the least. When we would try and sign it would say he did not have a PIN. If he tried to reapply for one it said he already had one. It actually reduced me to tears after spending 3-4 hours one day on the phone with FAFSA and the social security people.

What happens if you selected a PIN while registering for one? Since I already know what it is, can I immediately use it instead of waiting for some sort of notification?

You can check the PIN status
