On the FAFSA application, we had to go back and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. It deleted some of the forms and didn't put a "Transferred From IRS" message next to it. We managed to repopulate some of the forms but we are getting stuck on the one that says the following:

On the day you submitted your FAFSA, what was your parents' total current balance of cash, savings, and checking accounts?

The field is empty, and we have no idea what the answer to that question is. We answered "Yes" to the question "On the day you submitted your FAFSA, did the total amount of your parents' current assets exceed $39,700.00?", which apparently means we are not exempt from answering the question, and that we have to do it. There is also a pound symbol (#) right before the dollar sign, but we don't know what that means.

Any advice?

It seems there is something wrong with your DRT. If it is not marked as “Transferred from IRS”, it is not viewed as DRT verified but just another revision. Also, didn’t you have a record of your initial FAFSA filing? The asset balance should be there. Anyway, there much be something wrong as it should not delete asset data when doing DRT. It looks like you started a new filing.

The DRT is only going to modify income questions, not asset questions. The IRS has no info on your asset amounts.

Fafsa question 90:

https://fafsa.ed.gov/fotw1415/help/faahelp68.htm

You have to count up all cash in your parent’s wallets, hidden under the mattress etc. Add in the current balance of savings and checking accounts. Use online banking to find the amounts if you have it.

Any bank CDs would be included in investments in question 91 along with the other items listed:

https://fafsa.ed.gov/fotw1415/help/faahelp69.htm

You should be easily able to access your account balances as of the date of your initial filing…by looking online at your online banking.
