FAFSA question about corrections

If you submitted FAFSA as "Parent will file" and then you do file ... do you have to submitt a corrected FAFSA if everything else is exactly the same?

I think until you change it to reflect that the parent has filed no aid will actually be disbursed to you.

Yes....you need to change that filing status. Are you saying all of your numbers are EXACTLY the same. Wow! You did great estimating.

If you don't change to "completed" the college will not know that your numbers are final numbers reflective of your tax return.

Now, when I asked the same question about the Profile with colleges, they said corrections were only necessary if there were changes.

The numbers are the same. We inadvertently picked "will file" because we hadn't actually filed our completed returns yet. Bad move.

We did pick "filed" on the profile.

Just out of curiousity, could a correction trigger a review (or audit) or whatever they call it. Everything is by the book, but we'd like to avoid that hassle if we can.

I would not expect it to if you are just changing the will file to filed (or whatever it is). But i have no idea what triggers a verification - lots of 'random' supposedly and I am sure numbers that don't 'gel' like $20,000 interest income but no assets.

If you do get a verification notice it is no big deal. Just a short form to fill out and a few copies to make (W2s, 1040s etc). We were verified this year. I had wondered if putting 'will file' was one of the things that triggered a verification but I guess not if you did not have a * by your EFC.

Thanks. I think I'll call the schools and see if I have to do the correction.

Okay, the SAR does say that the correction has to be done - final status does have to be FILED.
