My parents separated at the beginning of this month (not legally but that fafsa says it does not matter). I live with my mother who is unemployed. My father pays for both residences. The fafsa says i should give the financial information of the custodial parent (one i lived with the most for the last 12 months, even by a day) so it would be my mother.

The issue is that all the tax questions refer to 2010, which makes sense, but it is also when my parents were together. So although it asks me to give only financial information about the custodial parent, it asks for information about joint taxes. For example, when it asks, "what is the parents income tax amount for 2010?" should I state the joint number?

I am also having similar issues with income. It asks for her adjusted gross income in 2010 but since my dad was the only one working I don't believe she has any. And since it doesn't account for the month they were separated in January in 2011, she hasn't received anything from him that i would report on the fafsa. Help and clarity would be much appreciated
