After reading multiple posts on this site I had come to the conclusion that it would be necessary for my ex-husband to submit income info for the FAFSA. I called FAFSA with a few questions about this and they said that as long as I am the custodial parent and provide greater than 50% of her support then they would only need my info. Is this correct? I believe that the ratio is something like 85/15% with my contribution being the 85%. I have never heard this before but I repeated the situation to the person at FAFSA multiple times and she assured me that if I was providing that much support that they would only need my info. Is this right?

Sounds to me like you fill out the form, yes.

Momnipotent, it is true that only the custodial parent needs to fill out FAFSA, however, most schools will insist on a non custodial income state regardless of whether or not he has been giving a dime, or if there is anything in the divorce agreement. If he has abandoned the family totally, the GC at the highschool can sent in a statement to that effect, and a number of colleges will let you off the hook with that, but otherwise it is a necessity before getting aid from most colleges.

At my schools I was told to simply write a letter explaining my non-custodial parent situation.

You can do that too, but many colleges won't buy the story. Too many deadbeat dads. But there are distinctions between a deadbeat dad and a dad who deserted the family. Many colleges need a third party verification from social worker, school counselor or clergy to let things go. It all depends on the college.

Thanks all.
