My child is a Freshman in college
I completed the FAFSA last time as a single person
I am now married (May 2017)
I filled out the FAFSA for her sophomore year 2018/2019 and it asked for 2016 income tax info
I was unmarried and filed single for 2016
I was thinking there was going to be somewhere to indicate my new spouse’s income but there was not
Now looking at my SAR info that came and it says “Parents’ Income”, should I have added my now spouse 2016 income to my 2016 income?
Or no?
I thought it compared what I enter to the IRS, if that is the case it would not match. I am unsure what to do now
When you filled out the 2018-2019 FAFSA, did you indicate that the parent status was married? If so, you should have been prompted to enter the amount earned form working in 2016 for both you and your spouse separately. I believe that for the questions about tax return numbers, you should have added the 2016 amounts from your return and your spouse’s return.
I went back through and requested to submit a correction. I indicated I was married
When I originally filled out and it says “parents” I think my ex and I (we were together 8 years but never married) so I had put in never married.
I went back and changed to Married and it prompted me for the additional info
I submitted it all, however it gave me an error (which it let me get past anyways) saying my answer to filing single in 2016 did not match my info I was providing.
So I will see what comes back
I listed our combined gross income from adding up our individual tax returns for that figure
I also listed our earned income separately as asked
I guess I will wait to see what they come back with
