The FAFSA for the 2006-07 school year can NOT be filed before January 1...period. That is the way it is set up to be done. You can use the downloaded form so that you can prepare to do your FAFSA on Jan 1, but you can't fill the "real" FAFSA out and file it until Jan 1.

Im making this way more complicated then it really is, so if someone can shorten it up, go ahead.

The first link is to the official 2006-2007 FAFSA form itself. Download the form to use only as a draft to help you and your parents complete the actual FAFSA form. Then if you are going to file by mail, transfer your answers from this draft to the appropriate FAFSA, which you should be able to get from your school. Every year FAFSA changes the color of the FAFSA forms so make sure you use the correct form. From the first link, it appears that FAFSA for 2006-2007 is blue and purple. For 2004-2005, I think it was pink and purple. For 2005-2006, it was green and purple. Questions on FAFSA are not in the same order as they appear online. Its okay to use this draft to help you fill out FAFSA online, but you may have to skip back and forth on your draft FAFSA in order to complete FAFSA online.

The second link is to a FAFSA web worksheet. On this link, read page 1 and the top of page 2-it tells you that the web worksheet questions are pretty much the same as on FAFSA, but the questions on the worksheet follows the order of questions as they appear online, so by using the web worksheet as your draft, filing online should be easier. The instructions are also quite clear for the worksheet-it is not to be mailed in. The worksheet is just to be used as a draft to help you file online.

Thumper is right, you cannot file FAFSA for school year 2006-2007 until January 2006. When you complete FAFSA, you are completing it for the school year you will be attending. I assume that you are a senior and will be applying for college in fall 2006 (or school year 2006-2007).

The above links are to official FAFSA forms. However, again, only use them as drafts. To apply online, you need to go to:

Thanks for the links Jugulator

This is probably a basic question but I haven't been able to find a clear answer for it. Say if my school offers me 20,000 in grants just based off my CSS profile. When I file my FAFSA, will I receive the aid from that in addition to what the school has already given me or will the federal funds just go towards matching what the school already had me set for and the school withdrawing the amount I received from FAFSA?
