I have a question about the FAFSA that I can’t seem to find an answer to. I’m hoping someone here will be able to help :-).
We filled out the FAFSA in Oct. for our two children, one a freshman in college and one a senior in high school. At the time my son was enrolled in a four year college but has now decided to transfer to a local community college to save money. He will still attend full time.
Do we need to make any corrections to the FAFSA given that he is going to a community college and not a 4 year college?
Thanks for any help you can give!
No…he is still attending college full time. Well…not in most cases.
There are some colleges that DO consider the cost of the siblings college when they award need based aid.
Maybe call a couple of the second kiddo’s colleges…and ask them what to do.
At some point, you will be asked to provide verification that he is actually enrolled…and your second kiddo too…to give to the other’s college.
So far the only need-based aid my daughter has gotten at any of her schools is the federal loan. We don’t qualify for much, if any, need-based money. Even with both attending full time, our EFC is 14320 for each one.
@4Hurley
Most colleges do not guarantee to meet full need anyway. That $14,000 would be the minimum you would be expected to pay.
@4Hurley , you fall into the zone where you probably do only qualify for loans at most schools. It’s tough, but that is the reality. Some schools have really great need-based aid, but have limited funds & must concentrate them on students whose EFC is lower than yours. Check the schools to see if there are any guaranteed scholarships based on GPA and test scores. My S didn’t get the guaranteed transfer scholarship he was supposed to get when he switched schools - I had to be a pain and make sure he actually got it.
