FAFSA Question

Summer session can be either a header or footer … that is, the start of an aid year or the end of an aid year. You have to call to find out. If it’s a footer, your child will get a budget based on the summer term. If Pell eligible, you will receive a semester of Pell if carrying enough credits (school determines status). You will also be eligible for sub loans if you have need & unsub, as well.

If the summer is a header, you will only be eligible for non-loan aid in 2 of the 3 terms for the school year. Also, loan amounts are capped annually; once the annual max is reached, no more is available … so if you use it all in summer & fall, there is no remaining eligibility for winter semester.

Of course, just to confuse things, some schools use a borrower based aid year - they base it on when the student begins & award for 2 of the 3 semesters following the student’s start date. You need to find out how YOUR school does things.

Most schools do not award FWS, SEOG, or institutional grants summer term. Some may, though.
