fafsa question

I was trying to fill out the worksheet and I noticed that they want me to put any other money that i received that was not taxable. Basically I am a junior now and my parents aren't paying for college but basically I need to put the money that they gave to me for school is that correct? It seems like that would also be a hard thing to do, I'm filing as an independent this year but they did help me last year since I was in college. They paid for my health insurance, school, books, rent, food, I did work but I am now not being supported by them any longer.

did you meet one of the tests for being “independent” or are you just doing this?

i am going to be 24 so I don’t have to put their income and no, I’m not doing this because I’m rebelling or anything, they are not going to pay for my college anymore

You do have to file as an independent student, without your parents’ info. However, if you were dependent last year, the money they paid for your schooling was “expected” … meaning that you wouldn’t need to report that as a gift. NEXT year you would have to report it if they were to give you money for this year. Money given by parents to a dependent student is not reported … money given to an independent student by parents is reported.
