FAFSA Question

for student info there's a question that says: When you begin the 2010-2011 school year, what degree or certificate will you be working on? and the choices are 1st bachelors degree and second bachelors degree? I know i'll be working towards by bachelors..but which one?

Do you already have a bachelors degree? If not then it would be your first bachelors degree.

Thanks for the response, though I have another question. My parents have high credit card debt, would that be beneficial for me to include to maximize my aid? And lastly, my parents have not received any 2009 taxreturns/W2 forms and the deadline for most colleges for FAFSA is around feb 15th. should i just wait for them to arrive?

i’m not sure about the first question, but regardless of whether you recieve tax returns/w-2s, you still need to send in the FAFSA BEFORE feb 15th.
tax returns and stuff can be sent after feb 15th if necessary.

As posted in another answer to OP … debt is not considered.

Credit card debt is NOT considered when financial aid is being computed. There is NO PLACE to report it on any of the financial aid applications.

You should do it in keeping with the deadline for the schools to which you are applying. If the school has a January deadline or a Feb deadline and your parents won’t have their taxes done by the deadline…here’s what you do.

File your FAFSA using a “will file” status which means you WILL file your taxes but have not yet done so. Use the BEST possible estimates based on your end of year pay stubs, interest statements etc. Then submit it to the school(s).

Do your taxes as soon as reasonably possible after Feb 1 when you have all of your 2009 documentation. Go back IN to the FAFSA website and amend your FAFSA to reflect the figures from your 2009 completed tax return and resubmit to the college(s). Change your status to “taxes completed”.

This is the year you want to get your taxes done as soon as possible. It is NOT the year to wait until April 15th to complete your taxes.

In your case…if the deadline is Feb 15 and your parents WILL complete their taxes by then…you can wait to do the FAFSA until after their taxes are completed. I would suggest that the do this ASAP after Feb 1. I personally don’t think it’s wise to do the FAFSA at the last minute so allow yourselves enough time to complete it without feeling rushed. The closer to Feb 1 that your parents complete their taxes, the better this year.

Don’t forget to SUBMIT the changes when you update your FAFSA. Sounds like a “duh” thing, but you wouldn’t believe how many students swear they hit submit, but they didn’t. You should always check a few days after you make any updates to be sure they processed. If you provided an email address, you will get an email that confirms receipt of changes (from the processor, not the schools).
